In Goa, the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won 32 of the 49 seats in the district panchayat elections, while the opposition Congress won only five seats. Of the total 50 Zilla panchayat seats in Goa, only 48 went to polls. Polling in Navelim seat in south Goa was cancelled due to the death of a candidate while, in Sancoale, the BJP candidate won unopposed. Voting was held on December 12 for these seats.
In the results announced on Monday, BJP won 32 seats while independents won seven seats. Congress got four seats, MGP three seats while NCP and AamAadmi Party (AAP) had to settle for one seat each.
BJP’s National President JP Nadda has expressed happiness over Goa’s results. Nadda said that BJP’s victory in Goa shows the trust of farmers, labourers, women and youth on the policies of BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the state government.
JP Nadda took to Twitter and congratulated CM Pramod Sawant. His tweet read, “Congrats to CM @DrPramodPSawant Ji, State President @ShetSadanand Ji & @BJP4Goa unit for a remarkable victory in the Goa Zila Panchayat elections. This result shows the faith of Farmers, Labour, Women & Youth in the leadership of @narendramodi Ji & policies of BJP govt in State.”
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed happiness over the BJP’s electoral performance in rural areas of the state. He tweeted “I humbly bow down before the people of Goa for the trust they have reposed onto the Bharatiya Janata Party as well as the Govt of Goa working under my leadership.
Let us shape a glorious and Swayampurna (Self Reliant) Goa by taking ahead of the same trust and confidence!.”
“We thank the people of Goa for their resounding endorsement of the politics of development envisioned by PM Shri @narendramodi. We also congratulate every BJP karyakarta in Goa on this landslide victory in Zilla Panchayat Polls,” tweeted Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Later addressing the press conference, Sawant said that the rural voters have shown their confidence in the leadership of the BJP and the state government.
He said that in many district panchayat areas, the party won with a ‘big margin’. Goa BJP President SadanandShetTanawade said that these results point towards the party’s support among voters. He said that these results also reveal what will be the outcome of the 2022 Goa Assembly elections. He said that the party will form an absolute majority government in the state.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took to Twitter to express gratitude towards the people of Goa. He tweeted, “ I thank people of Goa for choosing development in Zilla Panchayat elections. People across the nation have faith in PM @narendramodi led BJP’s SabkaSaath-Sabka Vikas. Congratulations to CM Shri @DrPramodPSawant, Shri @ShetSadanand and @BJP4Goa for this massive victory.”
This is the first time in this coastal state that AAP has won a seat in the elections. The party led by Arvind Kejriwal is aiming to contest most of the seats in the state assembly elections in 2022. There are 40 assembly seats in the state. The AAP opened its account in Hanzel Fernandes who won Benaulim seat in South Goa. Delhi CM and AAP president Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Hanzel Fernandes on twitter as he tweeted, “Congratulations to AAPs Hanzel Fernandes on winning the Benaulim ZP seat in Goa. Many other AAP candidates have secured much higher vote share than last time. This is just the beginning. I am sure AAP will live up to the trust and expectations of Goans.”
