After Rahul Gandhi’s resignation last year as Congress chief, following the defeat in the 2019 General Election, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed willingness to work under any non-Gandhi leadership. Even Rahul Gandhi was of the view that Congress should elect a chief outside the family before Sonia Gandhi was chosen as the interim President of the party.
This claim has been referred to in a book titled ‘India Tomorrow: Conversations with the Next Generation of Political Leaders’ authored by Pradeep Chibber and Harsh Shah.
“If there were to be another party President, he would be my boss,” the booked quoted Priyanka as saying. “If he tells me tomorrow that he doesn’t want me in Uttar Pradesh but wants me to be in Andaman and Nicobar (Islands), then I would jolly well go to Andaman and Nicobar.”
Priyanka also echoed the same thought as Rahul when he called for a non-Gandhi president for the Congress. She said that the party should carve out its path.
It has been one year of Sonia Gandhi heading the party as interim leader and there is a demand within the Congress party for an election for the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to elect a permanent president.
According to ousted party spokesperson Sanjay Jha, more than 100 Congress including MPs are unhappy with the status quo within the party and want fresh leadership. They have written a letter to Sonia Gandhi for a change in political leadership and transparent elections in the CWC. However, the party refutes receiving any such letter.
There is also rumor that Rahul Gandhi is not averse to taking the reins of the party again after a spate of rebellion in the Congress party.
