Is Michelle’s depression on account of a ‘low grade’ administration?

The former First Lady, Michelle Obama reveals that she is suffering from a ‘low-grade depression’ triggered by the global pandemic and the prevailing racism problem in the society. The social disparaging of the colored people in the US, which spread to other parts in the world has weighed down on her.

Michelle, who has started her own podcast, called “The Michelle Obama Podcast”, opened up on her depression problem in the second broadcast.

“I know that I am dealing with some form of low-grade depression,” The Guardian quoted her as saying. “Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife, and just seeing this administration, watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting. I’ve gone through those emotional highs and lows that I think everybody feels, where you just don’t feel yourself, and sometimes … there has been a week or so where I had to surrender to that, and not be so hard on myself,” she said.

Unhappy with the administration

Is her mental state also partly because of President Donald Trump’s poor handling of the racism issue?

The ongoing protests over “Black Lives Matter” that is bringing US into a grounding halt is also affecting her in a major way like so many others. The world isn’t happy the way Trump has come down heavily on protestors which can be profusely demoralizing.

“I have to say, that waking up to the news, waking up to how this administration has or has not responded, waking up to, yet another, story of a Black man or a Black person somehow being dehumanised, or hurt or killed, or, falsely accused of something, it is exhausting. And, and it, it has led to a weight, that I haven’t felt in my life, in, in a while,” she mentioned in the interview.

“Barack’s in his office, making calls, working on his book. I’m in my room, the girls are on their computers. But right around five o’clock, everybody comes out of their nooks, and, we like, do an activity, like, puzzles have become big, just just sitting and doing these thousand piece puzzles,” she added.

The lockdown routine, which has become the new normal is a big psychological agent that is affecting millions of people in the world. Detailing the environment at home, Michelle seems not very optimistic as everyone is busy with their chores.
