The Uddhav Thackeray government’s project of building a metro rail car shed at Kanjurmarg, which has been shifted from Aarey forest in the western suburb of Mumbai, seems to have eclipsed and the tensions between the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra and the Centre appeared to escalate further after the central government has staked its claim on the land of the car shed and put its board on it.
A new controversy has erupted after the state government decided to set up a car shed in Kanjur Marg by postponing the Metro car shed in Aarey. Since then, the state government has taken an aggressive stance claiming that the Kanjur site belongs to the state government, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde and Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray have clarified that the construction of the car shed will continue.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has overturned the decision of former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to start a Metro Car shed in Kanjurmarg. The state government is saying that the land that is being provided for the car shed is completely free. But now it is learned that the centre owns this land.
The Union Ministry of Industry and Internal Trade Promotion (DPIIT) has sent a letter to the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, Sanjay Kumar, saying the construction of the car shed on the Kanjurmarg site would be “against the interest of the Government of India”, and claimed ownership of the 102-acre land here. Earlier, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had sent a proposal for the project on this land which was rejected. Now the car shed is being built here which is wrong.
DPIIT Secretary Guruprasad Mohapatra said in his October 15 letter that “the improper and unilateral action of the Mumbai Suburban District Collector and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has “caused severe loss” to the DPIIT.
He added, “I would request you to take necessary steps and to direct the Collector to withdraw the orders passed in this regard to protect the interests of the Government of India.”
In such a situation, the question arises that without examining the documents, how did the Thackeray government decide to shift the metro car shed from Aara to Kanjurmarg. While the committee constituted by Uddhav Thackeray government for the relocation of the metro car shed also suggested to build car shed in Aarey itself.
The opposition party BJP has become aggressive after the claim of the central government about the land of Kanjurmarg came to the fore. Former minister and BJP MLA Ashish Shelar attacked Uddhav saying this project was going to be stuck, misleading and hanging. He added that Uddhav Thackeray is driving Maharashtra like an arrogant king and his son is living a life like a luxurious son. This government is not going to do any good for the people of Maharashtra.
On the other hand, SupriyaSule, daughter and MP of NCP supremo has expressed displeasure over the letter of DPIIT. She said “ in any law, the state government has the first right over the land. The central government is interfering in the development work of Maharashtra which is a violation of the state’s authority. The central government talks about the Union State but it seems as if there is an undeclared emergency in the country.”
