Accusing the Congress-led UDF and the BJP of targeting the LDF government in Kerala, the CPI-M on Thursday said that the two parties used the gold-smuggling case to attack state Chief Minister P Vijayan. The CPI-M wants to unite against the propaganda campaign of the investigating agencies. The CPM leadership said that it was targeting the Chief Minister and that a strong defence should be formed against this.
The CPI-M in the new edition of its mouthpiece “People’s Democracy” alleged that four central agencies — the National Abolition (NIA) agency, the Customs, the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Regulation Agency (CBI) —are investigating the Tiwari case and using it to increase scrutiny for various government projects.
The statement read, “Central investigations into to the gold smuggling case under the UAPA over the allegation that the money received through such smuggling was being used for anti-national activities is instead being used to implicate the political leadership of the ruling LDF government in Kerala.”
The editorial published in the magazine said that when the smuggling of gold through diplomatic baggage broke out in July, the Chief Minister immediately asked the Central Government to investigate the matter with any of its appropriate agencies. This was necessary, as the goods were smuggled from abroad. The party alleged that the Home Ministry has handed over the case to the NIA, even though there is no prima facie basis on funding terrorism or endangering the security of the nation.
The CPI-M said, “Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala and state Congress leaders are repeatedly seeking scrutiny from the CBI and other central investigative agencies. This demand is being made at a time when the All India leadership of the Congress Party and Its president Sonia Gandhi has publicly stated that central agencies like CBI, NIA and Narcissistic Bureau are being misused to target the opposition. “
The mouthpiece states that coordination between Congress and BJP leaders in the state is clear. The leaders of both parties are making similar statements regarding the investigations being conducted by central agencies.
The statement further said two of the accused, who are now in custody, have said they were being pressured to name the political leadership in return for being allowed to turn approvers, from being charged as accused.
It is to be noted that Swapna Suresh, the main accused in the gold smuggling case, had revealed that he was under pressure to testify against the Chief Minister. Following this, the CPM state leadership called for a united front against the conspiracy against the Chief Minister. The allegation of misuse of investigative agencies is extremely serious. The CPM also decided that the masses should mobilize and resist the move to overthrow the state government.
On Wednesday, a voicemail was released claiming that Swapna Suresh was saying that the ED had forced him to make a statement against the Chief Minister and that he was not allowed to read his recorded statement. Jail DIG Ajayakumar said that the audio recording of the alleged gold smuggling accused Swapna Suresh was not recorded at the Attakkulangara jail.
