At least three people have been killed and over 60 police personnel injured as violence erupted in Bengaluru over a provocative Facebook post by a relative of Congress MLA Akhanda Shrinivasa Murthy On Tuesday night.
People of the minority community took offense at the post by the MLA’s kin and resorted to vandalism in and around the city, burning several vehicles and destroying public properties. 110 persons have been arrested including Mr. Murthy’s nephew Naveen who posted the message.
Protesters cordoned MLA Srinivas Murthy’s house in the city and started pelted stones, forcing the police to use lathi-charge, tear gas, and firing to quell the mob.
“DG Halli and KG Halli saw violent incidents. To bring this under control, police used lathi-charge, tear gas, and firing. Police Commissioner went to the spot. Police bandobast is in place. Strict action will be taken against those offenders,” the Bengaluru police said on Twitter.
