The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) is preparing for the upcoming Mumbai Municipal Elections in 2022. Former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has raised the slogan of ‘Mission Mumbai’ and has tried to saffronise the Mumbai Municipal Corporation on behalf of BJP. Meanwhile, the Republican Party of India (RPI), the regional party of Maharashtra, has assured to continue its support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. RPI chief Ramdas Athawale on Sunday said that the Republican Party of India is with the BJP. Devendra Fadnavis has said that the BJP will come to power, but he will need the support of RPI.
Ramdas Athawale, RPI chief speaking to a leading daily said, “Republican Party of India (RPI) is with BJP. Fadnavis ji has said that BJP will come to power but they still need our support.”
Speaking to reporters, Athawale said, “We are the major associates of National Democratic Alliance (NDA). We had supported Devendra Fadnavis in the assembly elections. My party has a huge support base in Mumbai.”
RPI chief further added, “In the BMC elections last time, BJP had won enough seats and that was because we supported them without any demands. Shiv Sena also had enough seats but this time BJP will definitely have to give us some seats to contest BMC elections.”
He further said that he will be speaking to Devendra Fadnavis about his demand.
“I am hundred per cent sure that Devendra Fadnavis will give some seats to us and as said by him, this time BJP will have its Mayor. I want to add that Deputy Mayor will be of RPI,” he said.
Attacking the Shiv Sena, Athawale said that at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) the BJP-RPI will register victory and the candidates of these parties only wil hold the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts.
“This time the BJP-RPI flags will unfurl on BMC. Shiv Sena needs a jolt right now. There’ll be a BJP Mayor & RPI Deputy Mayor,” said Athawale.
Recently, the Mumbai BJP’s executive meeting was held in Mumbai. At this meet, the BJP handed over the responsibility of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation election to MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar and blew the election trumpet. Mangal Prabhat Lodha has been retained as the city BJP president.
Leader of the Opposition Devendra Fadnavis also said that the BJP flag would be hoisted on the municipal corporation and ordered the workers to start work. Fadnavis also suggested that the responsibility of wards should be entrusted to the youth who have studied politics.
Devendra Fadnavis also expressed determination that the BJP will overthrow the corrupt government of Maharashtra. He said, “We are going to overthrow the Thackeray government.”
Fadnavis further targeted the Thackeray government and asked who gave them the right to loot public money.
“Mumbai will get its first BJP mayor in 2022,” added BJP president Chandrakant Patil. Party leaders said that notwithstanding the optimism, the city unit is aware that Shiv Sena, along with Congress and NCP, cannot be taken for granted.
