The All India Anna DravidaMunnetraKazhagam (AIADMK) came to equilibrium on Wednesday as the party announced that the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, E Palaniswamy, will be the party’s candidate for the post of Chief Minister in next year’s assembly elections. The announcement was made by former Chief Minister of the state and the current Deputy Chief Minister and Palaniswami’s rival O Panneerselvam. Legislative assembly elections are due in Tamil Nadu next year. The announcement came after weeks of rumours and negotiations between CM E Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (OPS). Party coordinator Palaniswami also announced the formation of an 11-member Steering Committee, which includes ministers Dindigul C. Srinivasan, P. Thangamani and S. P. Velumani.
While making the announcement OPS said, “I am happy to announce that our dear brother Palaniswami will be the victorious chief ministerial candidate of the AIADMK for the 2021 Assembly elections.”
OPS further added that the decision was taken unanimously in consultations led by party praesidium chairman E Madusudanan. Talking about the 11-member Steering Committee Panneerselvam said that the 11-member steering committee of the party will look after the work of collective leadership.
The 11 memebr steering committee includes Dindigul C Srinivasan, P Thangamani, SP Velumani, D Jayakumar, CV Shanmugam, R Kamaraj, JCD Prabhakar, P Manoj Pandian, P Mohan, R Gopalakrishnan and C Manikam.
On this occasion, the OPS reminded the leadership of the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who died in 2016. The conversation between E Palaniswami (EPS) and O Panneerselvam (OPS) reportedly went on overnight and Ahle arrived at around 3.30 am and agreed to balance the power between the two.
According to sources, after several rounds of talks between the two leaders, it was finally agreed that the EPS would take over the responsibility of the government while the OPS would look after the party.
This agreement is very important before the return of AIADMK leader VK Sasikala who is jailed on corruption charges. Sasikala is likely to be released from jail in January, although reports suggest that she may be released earlier.
After this announcement, the party’s ongoing tussle from Independence Day came to an end. Since the announcement of Palaniswami as the Chief Ministerial candidate, hundreds of workers gathered at the party headquarters since the morning expressed immense joy and distributed sweets and burst firecrackers.
It is to be noted that after the demise of former CM J Jayalalithaa, his close associate O Panneerselvam was made the CM, however, VK Sasikala soon started taking charge of the state affairs. Then in February 2017, Panneerselvam resigned citing personal reasons. It was assumed that Sasikala would be made the head of the state but O Paneersalvem sat on a Dharma Yuddham at Jayalalithaa’s memorial, ultimately leading to his expulsion from the party. This paved the way for Palaniswami who was propped as the CM by Sasikala.
